A Letter from Allan Miles, Chief Planner

1st September 2008
Just to keep you informed we are still proceeding with our project & will be in
Singapore as planned on the 26th September & will hand over the Letters of
Peace to Indonesian, Malaysian & Singaporean governments. The dates for
these functions have been locked in for several months thanks to DFAT & the
governments concerned.
The plan has been revised & modified to take into account the changed
circumstances with the boat. It has been decided that the boat is not capable of
continuing the voyage in its present condition. The possibility of further
breakdowns in foreign waters is too risky. Language, availability of spares,
qualified tradesman, local practises & cost where considered & weighed heavily
in our decision.
But despite engine breakdowns, storms & adverse weather so far, the team
continues to meet all obligations, arranged for more than 6 months, so we do not
disappoint any person or group (RSL, Councils, Rotary or Lions) & to keep faith
with our beneficiary Legacy. All legs, activities, events, receptions & fund raising
activities for NSW & Queensland have been honoured.
As you are aware the original operation in 1943 had breakdowns, a replaced
engine & poor support for most of the journey & yet has become the benchmark
of military operations in planning, execution & success. I believe what matters
are not the setbacks we encounter but how we cope with them & continue on to
achieve our objectives…this project is continuing & will be completed.
The team is grateful far the support you have provided & the sector named after
Australian Geographic is still logged as promised.
I hope, now you understand that this tribute to the men of Operation
Jaywick…this Pilgrimage for Peace project is proceeding & will still achieve more
than 80% of its stated objectives…you will continue to have faith in us.
